But like any place, it has its pros and cons.
Having made the move from Athens 13 years ago, I’ve built a successful business in Kefalonia and experienced firsthand the genuine warmth of its people. The locals embraced my work, making the transition both smooth and rewarding. If you’re considering a permanent move, it’s important to be at ease with a quieter lifestyle and to have a deep appreciation for nature, as the island’s cultural and entertainment offerings are relatively limited. However, Kefalonia provides a stunning, peaceful retreat that’s hard to beat for a short-term stay.
Pros of Working in Kefalonia
✅ Quality of Life – Start your day with a walk by the sea and end it with a swim at a stunning beach as the sun sets. Kefalonia offers a slow-paced, relaxed lifestyle with breathtaking mountain and coastal scenery. The island is a haven for nature lovers, with hiking trails, hidden caves, waterfalls, and diverse wildlife. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy activities like biking, horseback riding, kayaking, sailing, and fishing year-round.
✅ Affordable Living – Compared to major European cities, the cost of living in Kefalonia is relatively low. Rent, food, and services are reasonably priced, making it easier to maintain a good work-life balance. Compared to Athens it is a little higher.
✅ Booming Tourism Industry – If you work in hospitality, entertainment, or services, Kefalonia offers plenty of opportunities, especially during the summer season. Hotels, restaurants, and tour companies are always looking for staff but you could even start your own business, like me!
✅ Remote Work & Digital Nomad Friendly – With improving internet infrastructure and plenty of inspiring locations to work from, Kefalonia is becoming an attractive destination for remote workers. Imagine setting up your office with a sea view! Just check the wifi speeds before you choose the place.
✅ Friendly Community & Safety – Kefalonians are known for their hospitality. The island is one of the safest places in Greece, with low crime rates and a strong sense of community.

✅ Mild climate, with moderate temperatures year-round. While it rarely gets very cold, you can still catch glimpses of snow on Mount Ainos during winter. However, during July and August, the island can get hot and humid, making it perfect for beach lovers but a bit intense for those not accustomed to the summer heat.
✅ Kefalonia is rich in culture and history, with several archaeological sites and ancient ruins to explore. From Roman villas to Venetian castles, the island offers a glimpse into its fascinating past. In addition, the island hosts numerous cultural events throughout the year, allowing visitors to participate in local festivals, music performances, and traditional celebrations, making it a perfect destination for history and culture enthusiasts.

Challenges of Working in Kefalonia
⚠️ Seasonal Economy – Many jobs, particularly in tourism, are seasonal. If you’re looking for year-round employment, options are more limited, especially outside hospitality.
⚠️ Difficulty Finding Year-Round Accommodation – Finding a rental for winter is relatively easy, as many summer accommodations become available at lower prices. However, securing a long-term rental for the whole year can be challenging. Many property owners prefer to rent out their homes for the summer season when they can earn higher profits from tourists. If you plan to stay year-round, it’s best to secure housing well in advance.
⚠️ Limited Job Market – Unlike big cities, the job market is smaller, meaning fewer opportunities in specialized fields. Many expats and locals run their own businesses to create work opportunities.
⚠️ Public Transport & Accessibility – While Kefalonia has an airport and ferries, public transport on the island is limited. Having your own vehicle is almost essential.
⚠️ Winter Can Be Quiet – The island transforms in winter—many businesses close, and the pace of life slows down. While some love this tranquillity, others find it isolating.
⚠️ Limited Healthcare Facilities – Kefalonia has only one main hospital, located in Argostoli, which provides general medical care but lacks many specialized doctors and advanced treatments. There are also a few smaller health centers around the island (in Lixouri and Sami), but they have limited services. For serious medical issues or specialist consultations, residents often need to travel to Patras or Athens. This can be a challenge, especially for those living in remote villages where access to healthcare is even more restricted. If you have ongoing medical needs, it’s important to consider the availability of healthcare before moving to the island.
Living in a Village vs. Living in Argostoli
Living in Kefalonia can be a completely different experience depending on whether you choose to stay in the island’s capital, Argostoli, or in one of the smaller villages.
🏙 Living in Argostoli – The capital offers the most convenience, with a variety of restaurants, shops, banks, and essential services. It is the social and commercial hub of the island, making it ideal for those who want a more active lifestyle. There are more job opportunities here, especially outside of tourism, but it may be harder to find year-round rentals. However, during peak summer months, the town gets busy with tourists, and prices can be higher compared to rural areas and it can be very humid and hotter than some villages.
🏡 Living in a Village – If you prefer peace, nature, and a slower pace, village life might be for you. The sense of community is strong—everyone knows each other, and life is deeply connected to the land and seasons. Kefalonia has 365 villages, ranging from larger towns like Sami and Lixouri, which have more amenities and services, to tiny mountain or coastal villages with just a handful of inhabitants or none at all! Some villages can feel very isolated, especially in winter when seasonal residents leave, but they offer tranquillity and a close connection with nature. Village life is ideal for those who enjoy gardening, growing their own vegetables, and being surrounded by Kefalonia’s stunning landscapes. However, access to services and tavernas can be very limited, and you may need to drive to the nearest town for shopping, banking, or medical care. If you love solitude, tranquillity, and a more self-sufficient lifestyle, village life in Kefalonia offers an authentic and rewarding experience.

A Multicultural Blend: The English, Albanian, and Other Communities of Kefalonia
Kefalonia is home to both a thriving English-speaking community and a sizable Albanian population.
