Most visitors to Kefalonia relish the hot weather, clear blue skies and soaring temperatures but sometimes is can get a little too much! Here are a few suggestions for when taking a dip in the sea or the pool is just not enough to cool you down…
Take to the water – there are many boat trips, cruises and boat rentals to choose from located all over the island. Feel the breeze in your hair, see our coast from a different perspective, and have a swim from the boat! Or go diving and discover the under-water world of Kefalonia! Let the kids (big and small) expend some energy at a waterpark, whilst you sit in the shad with a cooling drink.
Visit a museum – go indoors and immerse yourself in our history and culture (and the lost era of pre-earthquake Kefalonia), or nature and sea life. Kefalonia is home to some wonderful museums, dotted throughout the island, covering many subjects. Check out the extremely interesting book collection at Korgialenios library.
Go underground – the coolness of Drogarati cave will revive you and leave you filled with awe at the remarkable formations of stalactites and stalagmites. Take a boat ride on the magical Melissani Lake, mid day is a good time to visit when the sun shines directly through the opening above and brings the turquoise colours of the lake to life. Get the experts to take you on a tour of the fabulous cave systems and experience the underground world of Kefalonia.
Become a night owl – Take to the mountain and go stargazing, temperatures go much lower over night on the heights on Mount Ainos, and as a bonus you can star gaze with the experts! Go out later and experience a local festival, production, or event, there are many to choose from over the summer months with dancing, film shows, music and festivities going on until the early hours. Take advantage of the dusk and sunset and take a swim as the sun goes down…not only is it a beautiful time of day it is usually cooler, less busy and calmer. Enjoy café culture and bars, maybe take in some live music, or simply watch the world go by.
Find an activity in the shade – Join a cookery lesson and learn about Greek dishes, local products and production techniques and then enjoy your creations! Join an organised wine tour or tasting and visit some of the wineries of Kefalonia, there are plenty to sample and enjoy, cheers! Unleash your inner artist and join a workshop or retreat with a local artist. Take a stroll around the Botanical Garden in Argostoli and find out about local flora and fauna, habitats and environmental issues.
Wake up early – experience one of our magnificent sunrises. You can take an early morning horse ride into the mountains or sea, or take a slow trek with a donkey. Go to the top of Mount Ainos, either by car, jeep safari or trek, the temperatures are much lower at the summit. Not only are the views outstanding you may get a glimpse of the wild horses that live on the slopes.
