Wildlife Wonders of Kefalonia
Caretta Caretta Loggerhead Turtles

One of the most magical experiences in Kefalonia is witnessing the endangered loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) in their natural habitat, read more here. These majestic creatures nest on the sandy beaches of Mounda, Kaminia, and other coastal areas. The best way to observe them is by joining turtle-watching tours or visiting Argostoli harbor, where they can often be seen swimming near fishing boats.
Dolphins & Marine Life
The Ionian Sea is home to playful dolphins, which can often be spotted swimming alongside boats. There are no dedicated dolphin-watching tours, but if you’re lucky, you may spot them during a boat trip. I have seen them many times from Agia Efimia’s coastal road and on a boat trip from Fiskardo. Additionally, diving enthusiasts can explore Kefalonia’s underwater world, where vibrant coral formations, octopuses, sea turtles, and various fish species create a mesmerizing marine ecosystem.

Monk Seals & Underwater Exploration
The rare Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus), one of the most endangered marine mammals, can occasionally be spotted in hidden caves along the coast. I usually see seals in the little coves between Fanari and Lassi, near the capital. Scuba diving provide a chance to explore the island’s fascinating underwater landscapes, from dramatic rock formations to schools of colorful fish.
Wild Horses of Ainos
For a truly unique experience, venture up Mount Ainos, the island’s highest peak, where a small population of semi-wild horses roams freely. These beautiful animals are descendants of old Greek breeds and can be spotted grazing among the black pine forests of the national park.

Birdwatching in Kefalonia
Kefalonia is a fantastic destination for birdwatchers, with its diverse landscapes providing a habitat for around 245 of bird species, read more here. Wetlands, forests, and coastal cliffs attract a variety of common and rare birds, including herons, falcons, eagles, and migratory species. The Koutavos Lagoon near Argostoli, the Livadi wetland on the way to Lixouri and the protected areas of Mount Ainos are great spots to observe birds in their natural environment. Whether you are a seasoned birdwatcher or just enjoy spotting wildlife, the island offers plenty of opportunities to appreciate its avian diversity.

Animal lovers may be interested in supporting local animal welfare efforts. Organizations like ARK Kefalonia Animal Rescue and Kefalonia Animal Trust work tirelessly to care for and rehome stray cats and dogs. Visitors can volunteer, donate, or even adopt a pet in need of a loving home.

Horseback Riding and Farm Visits
For those who enjoy hands-on experiences, several stables on the island offer horseback riding and donkey trekking excursions through Kefalonia’s stunning landscapes. You can also visit small farms where friendly donkeys, goats, and other animals provide a charming and educational experience for visitors of all ages.
Ethical Animal Encounters
While Kefalonia offers numerous opportunities to interact with animals, it’s important to do so responsibly. Always avoid disturbing natural habitats, and support businesses that prioritize animal welfare.
